Mike Harper is a seasoned life and health insurance professional, celebrating 45+ years working in various focus areas within the insurance industry sector. He graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and departmental honors. He holds the following insurance designations: Chartered Life Underwriter and Fellow, Life Management Institute.
His initial training was in underwriting, when he held positions with Manhattan Life Insurance Company in New York and Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company in Newark, New Jersey. Mike then worked in insurance regulation for three years with the Bureau of Insurance in the Commonwealth of Virginia, where he was a senior policy examiner.
From there, Mike’s career took him to Occidental Life Insurance Company of North Carolina, where he managed new business and underwriting operations. This was followed by a position as vice president of the Life Company for Cotton States Life and Health Insurance Company in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was responsible for Life Company operations. Then came several years of product and process consulting work with insurance agencies.
Next, Mike’s career took him to Columbus, Georgia, where he worked for Aflac. He was second vice president of underwriting, and he oversaw the redesign of new business and underwriting operations. Mike then joined Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company in Columbia, South Carolina, where he spent over five years in new business and underwriting operations. He retired from Colonial in late 2002 as vice president of voluntary benefits underwriting.
After retirement, Mike’s career focused on long-term care, when he worked with the LTC Advisor Group in Charleston, South Carolina, and then with the CUNA Mutual Group in Madison, Wisconsin, where he was a long-term care specialist, working with credit union members in the Carolinas.
Mike has enjoyed working with Wolf Retirement Navigation since November 2013, where his primary focus has been to help individuals and businesses with life insurance, Medicare, and long-term care needs. He has taught insurance education classes through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of North Florida and is also an active member of Rotary. He is a former president of the Southeastern Home Office Underwriters Association. Mike lives with his wife, Mary Ann, in Atlantic Beach, Florida, and they always look forward to spending quality time with their three grown children and four grandchildren.
